Imagine trying to show all the different sides of yourself in one place. That's the challenge that Instagram hired me to solve. My task was to make Instagram the go-to spot for billions to comfortably share who they are.

Self-Expression Problems

Sharing your authentic self can be risky. Imagine someone who collects action figures but doesn't share their hobby for fear of being teased. The complex nature of identity affects what we share, and who we share it with, underscoring a major challenge for Instagram.

Finstas

A cultural phenomenon, 'fake Instas,' highlighted the need for a space where users could share less polished versions of themselves. But users didn't have the tools to manage multiple accounts. I was committed to changing that.

It was a lightbulb moment — All of our research about Finstas showed me that people wanted to segment their identities. And, leveraging separate accounts already met their needs. So, enhancing that experience became my team's focus.

I led a change that made it effortless to set up additional accounts. By leveraging existing user data, we trimmed away unnecessary registration steps. This secondary account registration flow drove tremendous growth for Instagram.

I designed a secure way for people to log into all of their accounts at once. This enhancement played a pivotal role in driving user engagement for Instagram, inspiring Meta leadership to adopt this feature at the company layer.

The switcher allows for effortless account switching. Integrated notifications keep users informed, entry points make it easy to switch in contextual moments, and spatial dimensionality reinforces account separation. This surface is foundational in supporting multi-identity expression on Instagram.

We built out the switcher to support effortless account switching. The integration of notifications ensures users stay informed, while spatial dimensionality reinforces identity separation. And, I helped extend this functionality across the Meta family of apps by supporting the development of a company identity switcher.

Selling an idea is everything. I learned this lesson the hard way, with one of my early concepts not getting traction. Over time, I've honed this skill, continuously refining my approach to ensure my ideas are not just heard, but adopted.

User Flows: I create broad explorations and iterate quickly, carefully organizing my design files so that everyone on the team can easily collaborate.
Prototyping: I create detailed prototypes that bring designs to life, showing engineers exactly how interactions could behave, fostering clarity and collabraton.
Design Decisions: Each screen is meticulously crafted with deliberate and impactful choices, encompassing visual design, user interactions, and edge cases to ensure a cohesive and effective user experience.

Lessons Learned

Design matters. Being part of a company that holds design in such high regard taught me a ton. This journey imparted invaluable lessons on user-centric principles, flexibility, and the power of team  collaboration.

Learning to Sell
When I was new at Instagram, I watched as another designer convinced leadership to adopt his idea over mine. Geez, it was painful. But, it taught me a big lesson: being able to sell your idea is everything.

Even if your idea is great, it won't go far unless you can get others excited about it.

So, I worked on getting better at telling compelling stories. I learned to leverage prototypes and videos to grab attention. I learned how to frame narratives around data. I learned to build relationships and earn trust.

Sometimes, the way you share an idea can make all the difference.
Teamwork
At Instagram, the synergy of working alongside brilliant researchers, product managers, data scientists, content designers, and engineers was transformative. Coming from an independent development background where I was accustomed to handling everything solo, the shift to such a collaborative environment was both exhilarating and enlightening.

Our projects wee a testament to the power of collective effort. By pooling our diverse skills and perspectives, we were able to achieve outcomes that no single one of us could have accomplished alone. The dynamic interplay of ideas not only enhanced our solutions but also deepened our understanding of the very people we aimed to serve.

This experience profoundly impacted my approach to product design, teaching me that the sum of our collaborative efforts is far greater than its parts. Embracing teamwork allowed us to make a meaningful impact in the lives of our users, a lesson that has been invaluable as I continue to evolve in my career.
Putting Users First
At Instagram, there's always multiple initiatives going on at once, which can be pretty overwhelming. Amidst this whirlwind, I found solace in moments of quiet reflection, reminding myself of our core mission: serving our users.

I strongly believe that when we think about what's best for the users, other good things like the company's growth will happen naturally. This belief was reinforced through my involvement in projects where we took a risk, focused on the users' needs, and reaped incredible benefits as a company.

These experiences taught me the importance of anchoring my work in purpose and prioritizing my 'why'.
